Pet sitter instructions: what to write in each section
Staring at a blank page? This is what to leave for your sitter, section by section, with example wording you can copy and adapt. Good instructions for a pet sitter are specific: amounts, times, and the one thing a stranger would never guess.
Your phone number, and a backup contact
Open with the two numbers your sitter will actually need. For example: 'Alex Rivera, (555) 123 4567, call or text any time, I reply faster to a text. If you cannot reach me, call my neighbour Sam on (555) 765 4321, he has a spare key and knows Bella.' Write the home address out in full too, because a sitter may need to read it to a vet receptionist or a locksmith.
Your vet, the emergency vet, and what you authorise
Name both practices with numbers and hours, then say yes in advance. For example: 'Regular vet: Maple Animal Hospital, (555) 222 3333, open until 6pm, Bella is registered there. After hours: City 24h Pet ER, (555) 911 0000, four miles east on Route 9. You have my permission to take her in for anything urgent, up to $500, and to call me from the waiting room.' A clear limit and a clear yes stop a sitter hesitating at the worst possible moment.
Feeding: food, amount, times and what is off limits
Be exact, because 'a scoop' means nothing in someone else's kitchen. For example: 'One level cup of the dry food from the grey bin, morning and evening, around 7am and 6pm. Half a pouch of wet food stirred into dinner only. Fresh water topped up twice a day, the bowl is by the back door. Two treats a day is plenty. No table scraps, no cheese, and please push the food bin lid all the way down, she can lever it off.'
The daily routine: walks, garden time or litter
Write the shape of a normal day so your pet stays on schedule. For example: 'Out for a 30 minute walk after breakfast, a shorter one around 6pm, and a quick garden potty break last thing at night. Harness, not collar, it is on the hook by the door. She naps in the sun on the landing most afternoons.' For a cat, say how often to scoop, where the spare litter is, and whether they are allowed outside.
Medications, one line each
For every medication, write what it is, how much, when, and how you actually get it into your pet. For example: 'Half a 50mg tablet with breakfast, pushed into a pill pocket, she spits it out if you wrap it in cheese. Flea treatment between the shoulder blades on the first of the month, pipettes in the kitchen drawer. If a dose gets missed, do not double up, just carry on next time and text me.'
Personality, quirks and house rules
This is the section sitters are most grateful for: the things that would surprise a stranger. For example: 'She leans on your leg when she wants a fuss and will not eat if you stand over her, so put the bowl down and walk away. Terrified of the vacuum. Barks once at the mail carrier then settles. Not allowed on the sofa, though she will try it on. Reward-based training only, no telling off please.'
The home: access, supplies and the jobs
Finish with the practical details so nobody has to text you at 9pm. For example: 'Key in the lockbox by the side gate, code 4821. Alarm panel in the hall, 0000 to disarm, press hash to set. Wi-Fi: HappyHome, password paws1234. Food, leads and poop bags in the hall closet, spare bedding under the stairs. Trash out Tuesday night, recycling every other Friday, and the ferns need water once mid-week.'
